World Sepsis Day
Know the Risks. Spot the Signs. Act Fast.
Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have —in your skin, lungs, urinary tract, or somewhere else—triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.
The global burden of sepsis is difficult to ascertain, although a recent scientific publication estimated that in 2017 there were 48.9 million cases and 11 million sepsis-related deaths worldwide, which accounted for almost 20% of all global deaths
Procalcitonin (PCT) is regarded as a biomarker with both diagnostic and prognostic impact, offering emergency department and intensive care clinicians a key tool to aid in the diagnosis of sepsis, and thereby improve antibiotic decision-making and potentially improve clinical outcomes.
VIDAS® B·R·A·H·M·S PCT™ is an automated test for use on the VIDAS® family of instruments for the determination of human procalcitonin in human serum or plasma using the ELFA (Enzyme-Linked Fluorescent Assay) technique.
Every second count when it comes to sepsis so VIDAS® B·R·A·H·M·S PCT™ gives results in just 20 minutes to aid the physician in early diagnosis of sepsis and to do a correct selection of anti-biotics thus improving patient survival.
